Egypt, Germany Set to Enhance Cooperation in Water Management

On 19th February, H.E. Hani Sweilam, Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation with Mario Sander, Head of the Middle East and North Africa Department at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development to discuss potential collaboration opportunities in water management.

The meeting focused on several water management projects:

- The preparation for the Fourth National Drainage Program, aimed at renewing covered drainage over 1.4 million acres.

- The feasibility of beach protection along 15 kilometers east of the Kitchener Drain outlet in Kafr El-Sheikh was also addressed.

- They reviewed the progress of the JISA Water System and Irrigation Project, funded by the German Development Bank, and agreed to expand its scope to include rehabilitating Ismailia Canal bridges and upgrading water infrastructure in West Beheira.

- Plans to improve water management in the Qota Canal in Fayoum were discussed, including modern irrigation and canal rehabilitation.

- The second phase of the Nile Delta Water Management Program was reviewed, focusing on water balance studies, infrastructure development, and agricultural drainage reuse.

- The importance of German support for the Pan African Center for Water and Climate Adaptation (PACWA)
