BP’s Major Oil and Gas Discovery in Egypt

BP has made a major oil and natural gas discovery in the King Mariout offshore block in Egypt’s northern Mediterranean, confirmed by Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly. The find is strategically located near BP’s existing West Nile Delta infrastructure, making it easier to integrate into Egypt’s energy network and support domestic production growth. This discovery comes amid heightened offshore drilling in the Mediterranean, with companies like Chevron, ExxonMobil, Eni, and BP exploring key fields such as Khanjar-1, Nefertari-1, and Zohr. BP is expanding its presence, having recently completed two gas production wells at the Raven Field and in the Mediterranean, with gas output expected this month. The company’s focus has now shifted to drilling in the King Mariout block, targeting the Lower Miocene layer, with reservoir access anticipated by the end of the month. Additionally, BP is strengthening its gas business in Egypt through a joint venture (BP-XRG JV) with ADNOC, aimed at enhancing Egypt’s gas production and supporting the country’s goal of drilling 586 wells by 2030. BP holds a 51% stake in the JV, which is set to start operations soon. These moves underline BP’s commitment to Egypt’s energy sector, reinforcing its position as a major player in the Mediterranean’s natural gas market.
